Almost all the setting windows, such as this Options window, can be used alongside chat. So if you're half-way through changing settings and something interesting comes up in a channel, no problem - just flip back to the channel window.

Changes to options normally take place immediately. In the above screen, I changed the nickname colour to pink, and this immediately took effect in the channel window.
